Destination 2050: The Long-Range Transportation Plan for the Boston Region

Home » Our Work

Destination 2050 logoThe Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) establishes a vision for the Boston region’s transportation system and guides both capital investments and research studies to support that vision. The current LRTP, Destination 2050, was endorsed by the MPO board on July 20, 2023. Based on federal funding forecasts, Destination 2050 prioritizes funds to address existing and anticipated mobility needs identified in the MPO’s Needs Assessment.

Destination 2050 Needs Assessment

A row of nine thumbnail photos labeled with illegible text, showing an exterior Green line stop, a bus in a bus lane, an Orange line car interior with seated riders, three pedestrians in a crosswalk in front of stopped cars, an aerial view of a Red line train crossing the Charles River, a streetscape with a shuttle bus and signboard, workers in safety vests closing a subway portal flood door, children playing with large soap bubbles in an urban park, and a handful of passengers waiting at a stop for an approaching bus.

The LRTP includes regionally significant projects that are expected to begin construction in the next 10 years and describes the MPO’s investment programs:

  • Complete Streets
  • Major Infrastructure
  • Intersection Improvements
  • Bicycle Network and Pedestrian Connections
  • Community Connections
  • Transit Transformation
  • Bikeshare Support

Throughout the development of Destination 2050, the MPO staff engaged stakeholders to solicit feedback, including the Regional Transportation Advisory Council, municipalities in the Boston region, transportation agencies, community organizations, advocates, and other members of the public.

The MPO implements its vision and goals by funding projects through the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and conducting studies through the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP). This work includes adopting new policies for prioritizing projects and selection criteria that reflect these goals and creating new funding programs to address needs, such as first- and last-mile connections. The MPO also studies issue areas identified in the LRTP, such as climate resiliency.

Amendment One

On December 19, 2024, Amendment One to Destination 2050 was endorsed by the MPO board at the conclusion of its 21-day public comment period.

This amendment includes the addition of the MBTA’s Green Line Transformation project. This is a bundle of 17 projects that the MBTA is pursuing for funding from the Federal Transit Administration’s Section 5309 Capital Investment Grants program. These Projects are elements of the MBTA’s Core Capacity application and are identified in the table above. Through the MBTA Capital Investment Plan, Boston Region MPO TIP, and Massachusetts Statewide TIP, the MBTA has committed the use of Boston UZA 5307 formula funding to support the completion of these projects. Upon award, Projects, budgets, and funding sources will be amended as required.

Additional information about this amendment can be found in the memorandum below.
