This safety and operations study is the latest of six similar past studies, which have received favorable responses from municipal administrators and directors of public works departments. The studies provide municipalities in the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) with recommendations and conceptual designs for potential short-term, low-cost solutions or long-term, high-cost solutions for intersections that need to improve safety and manage congestion.
The four intersections selected for this study, and cited below, had a history of many crashes and extensive congestion during peak periods.
- Washington Street (Route 53) and Broad Street in Weymouth
- Medway Road (Route 109) and Kmart Driveway in Milford
- High Street (Route 109) and Nahatan Street in Westwood
- High Street (Route 109) and Pond Street in Westwood
MPO staff analyzed these locations and developed recommendations to improve operations and safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Staff summarized results of the four intersection studies in three memoranda, one for each municipality.
