The curb lane in urban areas has traditionally been used for parking. However, in response to increasing and changing multimodal demand on the space, planners and municipal officials across the country are considering strategies to address different ways curb lanes can be used. This memorandum documents a literature review undertaken by the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to examine the ways in which cities are addressing demands for use of the curb lane. MPO staff researched examples of cities repurposing curb lanes in response to particular conflicts, the innovative solutions they have used to solve those conflicts, and the potential applicability of the solutions to the Boston region. This memorandum is intended to serve as a resource for municipal officials in the Boston region as they address similar curb management issues in their own communities.
