Exploring transportation decarbonization strategies is important to reduce vehicular greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, MPO staff examined the need for decarbonization, reviewed various decarbonization strategies, and engaged stakeholders, including municipalities, community-based organizations, and industry actors, in the North Suffolk area. The findings highlight critical environmental and economic challenges, including roadway congestion, poor air quality, and coastal flooding. MPO staff identified key decarbonization strategies, such as the electrification of freight vehicles, adoption of alternative fuels, enhanced air quality monitoring, and a shift towards multimodal transportation options. Finally, the recommendations emphasize the importance of coordinated efforts and outline potential next steps, such as conducting further studies and utilizing available grants, to advance freight sustainability and decarbonization.
