The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) began collecting bicycle and pedestrian count data in 1974 to inform transportation-planning decisions. Gathering data about the number of people walking and rolling provides the opportunity to evaluate long-term trends, estimate demand for bicycle and pedestrian access, and assess changes in active transportation infrastructure usage before and after projects are implemented. In 2009, MPO staff created a web application to share this information with the general public. To make these data more accessible to a variety of users, the MPO Board funded a discrete project to update the original application in January 2023. Through this project, MPO staff worked on three efforts related to Boston region bicycle and pedestrian data: (1) updating the count data application, (2) improving the manual data collection process, and (3) developing an automatic data collection process. We hope that these efforts will enable more stakeholders to engage with the bicycle and pedestrian count data application and use these data to advocate for policy interventions that will make walking and rolling in the Boston region safer and more comfortable for all residents.
