This study examined the safety and operations of three sets of intersections in the region, where, according to the MPO’s crash data system, many crashes occur. These locations are also congested during peak traffic periods. The resulting bottlenecks can spill upstream and often into a few adjacent intersections along an arterial. Typically, improvements for these types of bottlenecks include traffic signal design optimization, new traffic signal equipment, signal coordination, signs and markings, and pedestrian and bicyclist accommodation, including Americans with Disability Act (ADA)–compliant elements.
The attached three memoranda describe the existing conditions, problems, and recommendations for three sets of locations, one in each of the towns of Southborough, Wilmington, and Quincy. These were selected based on criteria that included safety, delay, and level of service, and input from MassDOT and the municipalities.
